Land Rover Repair: Discovery Starting Problems, mass air flow, spark plug wires

Question
For the 7 years we've owned our 1997 Discovery we have had an intermittent starting problem which is now getting worse.  The engine turns over but doesn't catch.  We have tried a number of remedies.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Sharon,

the problems I've had with starting were associated with the starter itself and the starter solenoid.  Oil, dirt, grime and even water have had its toll on this crucial component.

I was very surprised to learn that the Volkswagen Jetta has the same starter solenoid as the Disco.  The LR dealer wanted $250 for the solenoid; the VW dealer charged me $65.  Go figure?

I'd have the starter removed by a local starter repair shop and have it overhauled.  Might cost you $200 but it's worth it.

Next, I'd check the main wire lead to the starter solenoid. If it's covered in dirt, grime and oil, all of this can penetrate the wire and reduce it's ability to conduct.  Depending on where you live, corroded wires are a big problem with older Disco's. All of this can have an impact on starting ability.

Fuel injectors could need to be cleaned, fuel fiter replaced, air filter replaced or maintained (K&N).  Correctly gapped spark plugs, new spark plug wires, new serpentine belt, and clean battery terminal posts will help with starting too.

Have your alternator and battery tested.  Advance Auto can easily do this for you (and I think it's still a free service).  At least it will determine if you battery is fully charged and being maintained (charged) by the alternator.

Problems associated with the engine management system (EMS) can confound this problem.  A LR dealer should be able to test your various sensors to determine if they are working properly.  The mass air flow (MAF) sensor having the biggest impact on fuel mixture and starting.  This is a very expensive part to replace but it rarely fails.

Coilpack testing would be another component I'd inspect.  If there's the slightest crack or fault, you'll have starting problems that slowly get worse over time.

I hope all of this helps.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
