Land Rover Repair: New Brakes, brake pads and rotors, land rover dealership

Question
Hello,  I was at the a land rover dealership and they said I was getting close to needing new brakes.  He said that it would cost a fortune, because I would need new pads and rotors.. He said that both land rover pads and rioters wore together.  So every time you replace brakes you replace pads and rotors. That doesn't make since to me.  It seems that he is trying to scam some extra money out of me.  I have a 03 disco.

Thanks,
Warren

Answer
It is indeed customary for dealers to replace brake pads and rotors together.  If you do that, the chances of other brake problems (squeals, shaking, grinding) occuring are sharply reduced as compared with just replacing pads.

In addition, as you were told, the pads and rotors do wear together.  You could just change pads the first time, at 35-45k miles, but the next time the pads wore out the rotors would have worn below the replacement limit.

Replace the pads alone if that's your choice, but there was a reason for what the dealer told you.
