-----Question-----
just bought a 2001 disco II and have no idea where or how to check and new transmission fluid? is there a dip stick somewhere? thanks a billion! dylan
-----Answer-----
There is just a fill plug on the front of the oil pan, where the dipstick tube used to be bolted to.  With the engine/trans cold, start the engine and select all gears, back to park, and fill until oil just drizzles out the hole.

thank you! thank you ! thank you! but not sure if i'm fully understand the procedures for transmission DRAIN AND FILL. would you please direct step by step for me. the owner manual says the capacities for trans oil is 10.2 US Quarts and that's a lot of oil for the little oil pan and the fill plug is about 2" from drain plug. i understand the fluid circlelates in the gearbox. so the instructions above apply for just to filling;START ENGINE, SHIFT TO ALL GEARS, BACK TO PARK, AND FILL... WHILE ENGINE IS IN RUNNING MODE? what about drain and fill and what the reason for LR to have this set up for trans drain and fill? and not the convention way??? thanks again. trufully Dylan

Answer
the 10.2 qts is the total capacity, when you drain it you will not get all of the fluid out, probably about 1/2.

the fill above is for checking/topping up the fluid.

I don't know why LR do it this way now, but many other cars are like this as well.

drain and refill as normal, use the above to check exact level.
