Land Rover Repair: Silly handbrake problem, handbrake lever, t spring

Hi John, Odd question.

I was working on the gear lever linkage from inside the cab today - but when I went to reassemble the centre console the handbrake lever latch (that holds the handbrake in the upper locked position) is no longer working (it doesn't spring back anymore after the button is pressed in) so it cannot be locked in STOP, am I making sense?

Do you think I've broken it, is there a spring or such like I may have lost of broken?

I think you've flipped the lock lever upside down.  Get a workshop manual and look at the pictures and see the lock mechanism.  I think you'll find the lever is not grabbing the teeth any more.
