Land Rover Repair: Key lock/ ignition problem, land rover discovery, land rover discovery ii

Question
Hello-
I have a '99 Land Rover Discovery II.  When I bought my disco, the previous owners had misplaced the key fob w/ the unlock button.  I've been using a regular type key and just unlocking the doors from the driver's side.  The other day the lock would not turn.  I had it towed to Land Rover where it took them two weeks to get in it, then they said that the keys I had given them do not start the car.  The ignition apparently won't turn as if it is the wrong key.  They had a new key cut using their codes and it still did not open the door or the start the car.  They informed me that the next step is to replace the whole locks/ignition w/ a kit that costs $1245.  I'm not sure its really necessary for them to replace it all.  Is there any reason why the two would go out at the same time?  I can't think of any relationship between them besides maybe the alarm??  Does this sound familiar at all??

Thanks

Answer
It sounds like some bad luck for you.

If the locks in your vehicle were changed in the past, and the key numbers were lost, Land Rover won't be able to supply a new key for your truck.

If they ordered a key from your VIN and it does not fit that's probably what happened.

In that case, I am sorry to say the only answer is to swap the lock set.  There is a slim chance a locksmith could make a key for the ignition, but then you'd still have the problem of getting a keyed-alike door handle.
