Land Rover Repair: 2001 LR Discovery SD - 4.0L V8 OHV 16V FI Engine (Petrol), throttle position sensor, accelerator cable

Question
I have an intermittent acceleration surge occurring (like trying to kick into overdrive) between 40 and 50 MPH which only occurs when letting off of the accelerator. It doesn't matter whether or not I'm on level ground, climbing or descending. It feels like the accelerator sticking or advancing on its own even when taking pressure off of the pedal. If I press the pedal down to force a downshift, it seems to go away.

Is this the recall problem with the accelerator cable I have read about or, have you dealt with this issue before and if so, what have the typical prognosis been?

Thank you in advance for any insight or diagnosis.

Answer
Hi Chip,

my first thoughts were the sticking exhaust valve problem that seems to plague series II Disco's.  Usually raises it's ugly head when our Disco's are completely warmed up.

The Throttle Cable recall was for Disco II's and I think you'd know if this was the problem.  Your Disco would accelerate uncontrollably and your only recourse would be to shut the engine off and coast to a stop.

I've seen something like this with my throttle position sensor and maybe the MAF but that's the closest I've been to this problem.

If you have over 60,000kms it could be sticking valves otherwise I'm leaning towards the TPS fault.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
