Land Rover Repair: Crank Shaft Gasket, etc., land rover discovery, crank shaft

The text above is a follow-up to ...Dennis, thank you for your prompt response.  Although I understand this is not your area of expertise, I am certain you know enough about LR or any other vehicle to know a vehicle that isn't leaking oil or showing any other visible signs of problems would all at once blow every gasket known to man most especially after just leaving a shop for an oil change.  We thought the plug was missing but that wasn't the case.  So now it is at a different mechanic who works on LR and he is the one telling use the stories of the 7 in 6 months.  The mechanic who changed the oil isn't in the picture any longer because we are still not certain it wasn't his fault.  I didn't see John's name on the list of experts, any other suggestions?

The text above is a follow-up to ...how do I reach John Robinson?

-----Question-----
We own a 2001 Land Rover Discovery II SD which we purchased 2 years ago, obviously used.  We have never had a problem with the vehicle until last week when my husband started the engine, there was hesitation and the check engine light came on.  We took it to a local shop to have a diagnostic reading.  According to the code it was determined there was an engine "misfire".  We had the drive belt changed, oil change and a couple of hoses replaced along with the radiator flushed.  The car sat for three days before we drove it.  The first trip out after leaving the shop the vehicle had bellowing smoke from under the hood.  When my husband raised the hood, there was oil everywhere, even on the undercarriage to extend to the back windshield.  The oil light never came on.  We had to have the vehicle towed to the repair shop only to find at a tune of $4383.00 that every gasket from the Crankshaft to timing chain gasket has to be replaced.  It also needs a head gasket, cylendar heads and the list goes on.  This vehicle only has 37,000 miles on it and has NEVER leaked a drop of oil.  Could someone please advise if you have ever heard of this type problem.  Our mechanic says this is the 7th one in the past 6 months he has seen with the same problem and that it is something that Land Rover is aware of, but usually occurs around 80,000 miles.  Essentially, the entire top half of our engine will have to be rebuilt and we have never had a sign of anything being wrong until the oil was splattered all over everything.  We are at a total loss as we love the product.

My expertise is with the air suspension, I think John Robinson will have a much better answer than mine, ask him as well.

I have never heard of this being a recurring problem with LR engines, My Range Rover has basically the same engine, with 140,000 miles, I've heard of others doing 250,000.

It sounds like it might have been over-filled with oil, that could cause the problems you are discribing.

7 in 6 months, and I've never heard of it.  Leads me to believe it's a problem with the shop, not the engines.  But this isn't my field

Hi Lisa,

John is one of the other experts here, he also runs a shop in NewEngland.  If his name isn't listed he is off for vacation.

Answer
Hi Lisa,

Maybe the second mechanic has seen this 6 times from the other guy messing it up?

You should be able to find John here

I don't have any other contact info that I can give out, a google search should prove fruitful.
