Land Rover Repair: 2000 Disco: Burned out Check Engine L.E.D., discovery series ii, smog test

Question
I have a 2000 Discovery Series II. It failed to pass its smog test because the Check Engine light isn't working. I opened up the instrument panel thinking it needed a bulb and found that all the indicator lights are in fact tiny little L.E.D.'s and that the L.E.D. for the Check Engine indicater is fried. Can you tell me what might cause this and how it has to be repaired? Thanks, Rick.

Answer
Hi Rick,

ouch!  Since it's the Check Engine light, it could be the wiring, the connector, a short between the BCU and the light.  Was there any after-market lights added to your Disco?

I once helped my father-in-law with a battery boost.  At first, his vehicle did not respond to when the cables were attached to his battery and ground connection.  As I stood there, he unattached the booster cables, and touched the ends to determine if there was 'juice'.  "Holy Sh-t!", I yelled.  Stop that - you'll ruin my vehicle.  He just looked at me like I was some sort of lunatic.

Sure enough, my clock radio light, my rear fog light and my towing light were blown out.  That's the thanks I get for helping a relative.  arghhhhh!

SO...something like this could have fried your check engine light.  Not to mention some shady mechanics who just want to swap out your ECU for the sake of a few coins.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
