Land Rover Repair: 95 Classic Engine Surge, mass air meter, land rover specialist

Question
Hi John,  Your insight to this problem is most appreciated.  I have a '95 RR Classic 4.2l that develops a surge.  It only happens above 53MPH (once the tranny is in top gear).  If i try to accelerate, the engine surges approximately 250 RPM throughout the duration of the acceleration.  The engine has 85K miles.  What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer
Surge could be a distributor advance problem, a vacuum leak, a mass air meter - lots of things but those are my first thoughts.  I suggest finding a local Land Rover specialist with the skill and test equipment to get to the bottom of it.  Without testing, it's just a guess.

Look at the shop list on www.rangerovers.net.

If you want to fix this yourself go to Rovers North 802 879 0032 and buy a shop manual and do the tests they describe.
