Land Rover Repair: 2000 Disco II Flashing M+S, discovery series ii, discovery td5

Hi,

On my way home last night my 2000 Series 2 discovery td5 (auto) came to a halt. I tried to restart the engine, it tried to turn over but wouldn't fire up. Eventually i had to have the car recovered back to my house where it now sits. Do you have any idea what the problem could be.

Hi Scott,

in your owner's manual, when both the Manual and Sport mode
lights flash together:

"...this indicates an electrical fault with the automatic gearbox. If the lights continue flashing after the vehicle has been brought to a halt and the starter switch has been turned off and then on again, you should seek qualified assistance urgently."


I remember reading about a known problem with Series II and the M + S light.  

Did you have rain recently or drive thru water or car wash or wash/spray underneath the Disco?  This may be the cause of your trouble.

Sport and Manual Mode Light Illuminated

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

Discovery Series II (LT) up to 2A740268

SITUATION:

UNEXPLAINED ILLUMINATION OF SPORT OR MANUAL MODE INSTRUMENT LIGHTS

The customer may complain that the "S" or "M" symbols for the transmission are illuminated without having changed the shift mode. Water may enter the gearbox starter inhibitor switch harness connector via the harness joint causing this symptom.

RESOLUTION:

INSTALL NEW NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH AND HARNESS

When the customer complaint has been verified, investigate the source of the problem and, if indicated by the inspection, replace the harness and switch.

PARTS INFORMATION:

YMD001180 Harness - gearbox Qty 1 Without diff lock and with Interlock (NAS)
UHB100190 Switch, neutral safety Qty 1

WARRANTY CLAIMS:

86.70.20 Time: 0.90 Hrs
Replace gearbox harness

44.15.19 Time: 0.30 Hrs
Replace start inhibit/neutral safety switch

FAULT CODE: L

Normal warranty policy and procedures apply.
Material allowance is included in labor operation.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

INSPECT FOR CORROSION

1. Refer to the RAVE Electrical Library connector view C0675 to identify the start inhibit/neutral safety switch connector location.

2. Inspect the switch harness connector C0675, for corrosion. (Figure 1)

REPLACE STARTER INHIBITOR SWITCH AND HARNESS

1. If corrosion is evident, refer to the RAVE Workshop Manual section 44.15.19 and replace the start inhibit/neutral safety switch. (Figure 1)

CAUTION: The harness multi-plug must only be installed after the new harness is installed.

2. Refer to the RAVE Workshop Manual section 76.25.01 and remove the center console.

3. Disconnect 3 multi-plugs and 2 connectors on the gearbox harness from the gearbox and the transfer box.

4. Disconnect the 3 gearbox harness multi-plugs from the main harness.

5. Feed the gearbox harness through the tunnel and remove the old harness from the vehicle.

6. Feed the new harness through the tunnel and secure the grommet.

7. Connect multi-plugs to the main harness.

8. Install the center console.

9. Connect the 3 gearbox harness multi-plugs and 2 connectors to the gearbox.
