Land Rover Repair: 99 Disco II Starter just clicks, needs replaced!, starter problem, liquid wrench

Question
My 99 Discovery II w/ 105K just decided to not start, only a single "click" each try. Even after $1,800 in all sorts of maintenance last month! I just read your answer to another's starter problem and agree that I should change the starter relay and replace/bebuild the starter. However I can't get past that Starter Heat Shield to remove the starter and test it out in the first place. After bending it out, I saw a single bolt holding it down, but can't get to it. It is on the inside of the sheet metal, and behind the manifold. I bent it as much as possible to try and break loose the bolts for the starter, but couldn't even get that done. I've almost given up, and am ready to call a tow truck to take it to Land Rover. Any words of advice before spending that EXTRA MONEY???  Thanks Jordan

Answer
Hi Jordon,

That bolt should be just like my series I...an allen key that is insert using a very long extension.  I mean a VERY LONG extension.  Make sure to do this with the engine cool.

Very rare to have the relay fail BUT solenoid is a key figure in this type of problem.

Spray the area with "liquid wrench" or your favourite penetrating oil.  Wait a few hours and try again.  It will come loose ...  enventually.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
