Land Rover Repair: 1998 land rover discovery engages (Viscous Fan?), land rover discovery, land rover specialist

Question
I am expereincing a roaring sound when my air condition is on.  The Viscous Fan seems to be engaged; however, it releases once speeds of 35 - 45 mph are reached.  I have done the famous test of trying to spin the fan when the engine is off and it is in good shape (firm).  Is there some sensors that may be dirty or need to be replaced?  When the Viscous Fan is engaged at take-off I am losing some power (not much), but it is killing my gas mileage.  Currently I am getting 13-14 miles per gallon or 300 per fill-up (22 gallons).  Please help

Answer
13-14 miles per gallon is pretty common.

You should find a local Land Rover specialist and let them listen to your truck.  There is no way I can advise you on the fan because I can't hear it.

I think you may be hearing the electric fans, which come on when AC is switched on.  If they are really loud one may be damaged.

There may also be a problem with the AC ventilation blower in the car, or you may be hearing the recirculation door open.
