Land Rover Repair: 96 Discovery Turn Signal / Headlight Switch replacement, fuse box, elgin illinois

Question
Hi John - Your replies to all questions here are quite helpful! I wrote you a few days ago about my dash lights and glove box light being out. . . I did as you said, checking fuses / bulbs and replacing any if appropriate. No luck.

Then, I had an idea being automotively handy and a former ASE Cert. Mechanic, I acquired a Rover factory service manual with schematics and began to trace circuits.

First, I went to the fuse box under the dash and with a multi meter found no power at F2 & I think it was F8. So I went further under the hood to the engine compartment fuse box. All was good there meaning the problem was after the engine fuse box. Through more trouble shooting I found power went from the engine compartment fuse box to the headlight switch and the switch when turned on transfers 12V to other wires in the switch (in this case a red wire)  for dash lights, glove box lights etc. . . With the multi meter I got no power at the red wire but 12V at the other. So I jumpered from the hot wire to the red wire on the switch connector and VOILA! all lights came on that did not work previously. I verified my headlight  / turnsignal switch is bad.

Now, John. . . how can I change it? I couldnt find your answer on SRS / Airbag deactivation.

Do you have any info? Again, I feel great that my troubleshooting skills came back like riding a bike after being out of the auto world for so long!

I am ready for the next step. Please advise! Thanks - Chris Walsh, Elgin, Illinois

Answer
Hi Chris,

you'll have to remove the steering wheel then expose the upper column components.  Once the column switch assembly is revealed, you should be able to replace the switch.  Send me an email and I'll send you some instructions on this.
