Land Rover Repair: Freelander gearbox, intermediate shaft, circlips

Question
Hi there. I have a 1999 Freelander 2ltr td. L series with rover gearbox. My IRD intermediate shaft is damaged and consequently stripped the splines where it enters the gearbox. Cannot get 2nd hand box in N/Ireland and Recon box is £750 + vat. I have removed the gearbox and IRD. I'm now attempting to recondition them both myself. I have split the gearbox but it will only come appart about 20mm. I do not want to force it in fear there is something holding it that i have missed. Any tips you have would be greatly welcomed. Many thanks; Dominic

Answer
When you pull the housing you have to open the two circlips at the two shats' endings. If you send me an email address I will send pictures, of the gearbox dismounting.

The IRD isn't dismountable, and if you can, you will not able to buy any inner part to that. There are only seals for the IRD from factory.
