Land Rover Repair: camshaft, camshaft, sprocket

Question
Hi, fair play for this site!
So, I've got a '95 Disco 300Tdi..
Just changed the timing belt and when trying to slip on the new belt the camshaft sprocket appeared to move a notch. Dubiously we turned it back so it was aligned again. However when we finished the job and test started the car (didn't drive it) it did not sound right. When I put my foot on the accelerator it doesn't seem to have any force, and there is considerable whitish smoke coming out the exhaust. Should I go back and move the camshaft sprocket another notch? And keep doing it until I find the right place? And have I done some serious damage to my car???
I hope you can help..thanx in advance, stela

Answer
You can't let that cam alignment slip more than a tooth before the valves hit the pistons and you get expensive engine damage.  I suggest you read the procedure in the workshop manual very carefully and go back and get it right.  They do describe it with illustrations.

Turning a tooth and guessing will leave you with bent valves.
