Land Rover Repair: SRS lights, seatbelt pretensioners, srs service

Question
Hi,

I own a '01 LR Discovery. I have had the SRS lights come on and off usually I would take it to the dealer. Now that my warranty is up I had the same problem. They now say it is the RH Pertitioner and LH pertitioner. Have you heard of this before. I beleive it is almost $2K worth of repair.

Answer
Hi Rosa,

a "Pertitioner" is a legal term and I have never heard of this as a LR component.  There are two pretensioners...one for the driver seatbelt and one for the passenger seatbelt. Both are controlled by the DCU (diagnostic control unit) and are part of the SRS system.  Under certain conditions, the DCU can direct the deployment of the air bags and the seatbelt pretensioners.

If you have had previous SRS work (hard copy evidence is needed) you can ask LR to repair the work at their expense.  SRS component failure is very, very rare.  You could argue that the warranty work done on the SRS system never truly addressed the root of the problem...until after the warranty expired.

A judge would determine how rare the component failure is and the evidence that warranty work was done but the problem was never resolved.  You may have a strong case here IF you've had previous SRS service while under warranty.

Best of luck,
