Mitsubishi: Loud knocking when it rains, econos, brake job

Question
I have a 2000 Mitsubisht Galant with 63,184 miles.  When it rains my vehicle make a very loud banging noise.  The noise sounds like it is coming from the front right side of the car.  My husband said it sounded to him like the bearing was bad.

The car has been taken to the dealer - they could not find anything wrong with it.  I have also taken it to two other reputable shops and they also could not find anything wrong with my car.  When you drive on a street that is slightly curved that veers to the right you can hear the noise. Sometimes when you let up off the brake going about 30 miles an hour you can also slightly hear the noise.  What could be wrong?

Answer
Hi Andrea,

Wow, I have been in auto repair most of my life and never heard of this one! But, I feel you have a brake hanging and it is chattering when it's wet. This could be caused by a bad caliper, cheap pads or a warped rotor. I would start with a brake job with good pads and quality rotors. Brakes are something not to mess with and there are companies out there that sell "econo's". Junk is the word that comes to mind. So be real careful choosing who puts them on for you and I know for a fact that dealer's have used these econos but charged for the real deal. I suggest Bendix or Raybestos premiums. If you decide to try this fix then you might also look at ceramic pads. Good for a lighter car such as your Galant, not good for heavier cars and trucks. The don't leave any brake dust either. Hope this helps, please keep me informed!
