Land Rover Repair: Land Rover Disco 2, land rover discovery 2, land rover discovery

Question
-------------------------
John,

Thank you so much for all of that information! I am VERY nervous with all the things I have read to have my mechanic do any of the work, but really can't afford to pay $5000+ to have everything done at a dealership.  I know my mechanic very well, and I do trust him, but I am wondering if having him do all these things is ok?  The dealership was only going to do the 60k service.  I haven't set up a appt. for the other things yet, and was planning on having him do that part of it.  He is very good with vehicles, although I am not sure if he has any experience with Land Rover.  Would there be any information that I should make sure that he has, or things to ask him to do as well? I will tell him about the exhaust issue you mentioned earlier.

I love the air ride suspension, and guessed that this would be spendy if something ever happened, but I guess you take that risk when you get a vehicle you've always wanted!

I also read that someone was having problems with the alarm system not allowing the vehicle to start when they replaced the factory stereo system.  Is this common, or was it just not properly installed?  I was making an appointment with a local customization shop to have a new cd player and changer installed as well as tint.  Thought I would ask if there was anything I would need to make sure they did as well.

Well, with all the worries, I could probably put you to sleep, but thank you for your speedy reply earlier, and thank you for letting me bug you with silly questions!

Thanks again, Alyssa

P.S.  I think I will name her Aphrodite!

I have just purchased a 2000 Land Rover Discovery 2 and was wondering if there are any problems that I should be looking for specific to the year or model.   So far I have had no problems with the vehicle, but I am having some things replaced.  Right now there are only 58k on the vehicle, so at 60k I will have the factory recommended check and change of fluids.  Right now I am having front/rear rotors and pads replaced as well as the plugs and wires, air filter, head gasket, and having the alternator and battery tested.  Is there anything else you recommend checking or changing as well?

Thank you for your help!

Hi Alyssa,
replacing all the fluids is a good practice, one you should adopt every two (2) years.  You can have a local garage do this for much less than a LR dealer OR do this yourself.

While it's at the dealer, ask about the dreaded sticking exhaust valve problem.  It can start causing power loss at about 50,000 mile marker at which a valve job is required (+2500$).

Window and door switches often fail and at the most awkward times (during a rain shower).

Rear door latch can fail and lock may not work.  Keep this lubricated and clean often.

Air suspension is a big problem...leaks develop and air spring (air bag to some) are often the culprit.

ABS, HDC and TC lights can activate at any time.  You are having your brakes serviced...make sure the ABS light does not activate shortly afterward.  If it does...take it back to the dealer right away.  It's there problem if it happens soon after your brake job.  Wheel sensors are ... well...sensitive.  And expensive!  The ABS system has loads of problems and I've had to help many owners with this.

Look for water leaks in the passenger and driver footwells.  Lift up the carpet to see if this has been a problem.

Best of luck with your Disco!

NB:  old tradition is to give your LandRover a name!  Mine's "Simba"...I have a wheel cover with a profile (head only) of a male lion.

Answer
Hi Alyssa,

the fluid change by a LR dealership can cost up to $700.  A local garage could do it all for about $300.

I had thought you had purchased the Disco from a LR dealer and was making sure all things were tested before you drive it off the lot.

IN your case, have the fluid flush and inspection performed at the dealership.  Make sure they know this is a used purchase and that you want a complete inspection.  Should not cost you much.

AS for repairs...wait until after the inspection.  Fluid flush and brake work will cost you enough.

Of all that I mentioned, the engine exhaust valve problem is one that MAY happend to your Disco.  Keep a good maintenance record, change your oil at least twice a year or more if you drive often.  All fluids every 2 years.

Purchase fuel from reputable stations (octane 91 or 94).  No additives will prevent the exhaust valves from sticking BUT routine maintenance, clean oil, spark plugs, wires etc can help.

All else can be something you choose to do at your own pace (pocketbook).

Best of luck with Aphrodite (she must be a beauty).
