Land Rover Repair: landrover 2003 window, landrover discovery, knuckle buster

Question
hi :)  i have a 2003 landrover discovery with a window repair.  the drivers side window made a pop sound and although the motor runs, the window will not go up or down.  how would i take the door apart to repair?

thanks :)

Answer
Hi Ellen,

be careful here.  It's possible that the window is being held up temporarily.  Perhaps the bracket that drives the window glass (and frame) has lost a rivet and thus is not working.

Repairing this is not something left to the average DIY'er.  Even with the door panel removed, the space available is small and awkward.  A real knuckle buster of a job!  If you can, have a LR mechanic perform this repair. I've done this and it's not easy.

The speaker would have to be removed, the handle removed, the door panel is held in place by pop rivets (hard plastic rivets that can break!) You carefully pry around the edges of the door panel to remove it.  Go slow and don't be in a hurry to remove the panel all at once.

With the panel off, peel away the plastic moisture barrier.  That opening at the bottom of the door is your only available workspace.  For a seasoned mechanic, it may be enough...for me, it was way too small an area to work in.

You'll lower the window to see what is broken and you may have to replace the framing or lift bracket, depending on what's broken.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
