Land Rover Repair: Landrover Discovery TD5 2002, wheel sensors, auto electrician

Question
We seem to have developed a problem with the braking system. The ABS,hill decent and traction light come on for no apparant reason. Then when the vehicle is stopped and restarted the lights will remain off for some days and then for no reason they suddenly come on again. This could happen when just driving down the road and not applying brake at all.

Landrover say they want to place a diagnostic system on the vehicle and this will tell exactly what needs to be replaced. I am somewhat cynical of this response. We did go to an auto electrician and he placed a diags on it and said the the PSSU showed an electrical fault! But could not say what needed replacing.

Can you please advise what this problem could be as it is so very intermittent. We have had the vehicle since new and based in Australia.

Answer
Hi Bob,

this is a common problem with Series II Disco's.  I've coined the phrase "3 amigo's" as they are like 3 friends who come and go as they please BUT usually won't go away.

Often the problem is with the ABS system but I've seen the wheel sensors and ACE valve trigger this problem too.

If you do go to your local LR service garage, make sure they swap out parts TEMPORARILY to determine if it trully solves the problem.  I've seen some dealers swap the entire system out over many, many visits.  Swapping parts does not solve the problem, only jack up the repair bill.

If LR is convinced its the ABS modulator, have them put in a temporary one to see if it's true.  It's your money...just make sure it's being well spent.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
