Land Rover Repair: 01 Disco II chirping noise, octane gas, gear selection

Question
No, it does not make the noise all of the time.  I recently changed the oil and got some 93 octane gas and the sound seems to have gone away, but I can still slightly hear it from time to time, but nothing like it was at one point.

The noise is not apparent all of the time.  When the noise is apparent, it is in all gears including park and sometimes gets louder when accelerating and sometimes is the same when just ideling.    It does not change pitch when going from reverse to drive, but does change pitch in general from more of a chirp to a tapping noise or a combination (it doesn't seem to have anything to do with gear selection or RPM).  The noise seems more apparent when the car is warm.

Hi Kalani,

On Monday, I asked you the question about a chirping land rover.  Your answer is what I suspected after doing some more research.  However, as of late, the noise has developed into more of a tapping noise.  I have tried to pinpoint the noise by listening and it is clear this noise is not coming from the pulleys or belt as the noise in much louder and evident when underneath the vehicle.  It almost sounds like the transmission.

The noise is louder at times than others and seems to like to make its presence known when the engine is warm.  The noise changes from sounding like more of a chirp to more of a tapping and vice versa.  I realize you really have no idea just by this description, but feedback or advice you could give would be excellent.

Much Thanks,
Nathan

Hi,

My 01 Disco II has just recently started making a "chirping" noise both when ideling and when accelerating.  The noise speeds up as the engine accelerates.  I do not think it is a belt making the noise, and it sounds like it is coming from somewhere around the manifold, at the top of the engine compartment.  The car has 52,000 miles.

Thanks in advance,
Nathan

Chirping ? to me that would be a alternator or A/C pump or one of the pulleys

this sounds like the flywheel is cracked from your description of the sound. is it doing it all the time? or just in drive, dose it get louder or softer when you hit the gas? or when you put in gear? dose it change pitch when you go from reverse to drive?

Answer
well i wish i could listen to this thing my self i could tell you, but some one around there has got to know what to listen for, to me it sounds like flywheel or lower end of the motor, its easy to think its one or the other so be careful of who you have look at this, sorry i couldent help ferther
