Auto Insurance Claims: Claim Scam?, Claim Scam?

Question
My sister's husband had fender bender 3 years ago. He was uninsured, and the other driver was insured. He never heard a thing from either the insurance company or from the other driver.  They got a bill 3 days prior to the 3rd anniversary of the accident from the insurance company saying they owed $5,600.00 to the insurance company. What are my sister's rights here? The accident was definitely not a $5000.00 one. They are making her offers about reducing the bill that are too good to be true.  She is afraid she is being scammed by them.  What questions should she ask?

Answer
Hello Mary,

If she caused the accident and the damages, she must pay for them. That's what insurance is for, and she did not have insurance, she must deal with them. She should probably contact an attorney and see if the statute of limitations is expired and if so, what to do next. If it is not expired, then she needs to look at the estimates and see if they are reasonable and then start making payments.

Before anything, talk to an attorney.

Good Luck,
Anne
