Land Rover Repair: Disco 1 98 Alternator, advance auto parts, salvage yard

Question
Well changed the Alternator and it works fine. Now the Check Engine light remains. I was under the impression that the changing of the Spark Plugs which were not changed for some time would do it but it didnt. So now i need to get rid of that. is only the O2 sensor be causing it. If so then do i have to change them or there is something more behind the issue.

Also the service engine light is still up and i followed the link u showed me but for some reason the pictures in that link are not corresponding to my disco. Is it a poissibility if 98 Disco's were different.

Thanx alot for the help. I really appreciate it.

Ok I have the truck and loved it until i had to park it due to a problem. Since November the truck would start but the battery would die as soon as i went somewhere. If i left pressing the gas paddle it would turn off the car.

some one told me it is the alternator is that true.

Also i have check engine and service engine light on. It is at 125K Miles. Do i really have to take it to the dealership. They rip me off soo much and i am  a student :(

Hi Rubeel,

it does sound like the alternator.  Go to www.car-part.com and you'll find a salvaged replacement for a reasonable price.  Select a salvage yard close to your location.

Install is very easy.

The check engine light may be associated with the failed battery.  The service engine light is an emissions reminder and can be reset with a OBDII reader or manually.

GOTO www.discoweb.org and select the TECH section.  Scroll down and look for Reset Service Engine Light topic.  It will step you thru and provides photos.

Best of luck,

Answer
Hi Rubeel,

so the battery now is being charged, that's good.  The Check Engine light indicates another problem?  Go to an auto parts store, like Advance Auto Parts, and ask if they can read the OBDII code(s) that are currently recorded.

It may not be related to your O2 sensors.  Get the code or codes first.  They will help with the diagnosis.

The OBDII reader may also be able to reset the emissions test reminder (Service Engine) light.  You can also look for a european auto service shop and ask if they  can reset this for you.  Some have the testbook equipment used by LandRover and can do this for a small reasonable fee.

Write back to me with the code or codes that are being generated and we'll look further into this.  Sounds like you had more than just an alternator problem.
