Towing Issues: Towed for expired registration, back doors, tow companies

Question
I was just wondering what laws do the towing company have to abide by as far as towing a car. I had been pulled over in my girlfriends car as her registration had expired 2 weeks previously. Obviously i had no idea or the 40 something dollars would have been paid immediately. Anyways i was told to leave the key in the ignition and i had to go to he officers car. He brought me home but didn't allow me to stay and make sure the car got on the tow truck all right. My girlfriend drove by shortly after we left the scene and had said they had the back doors of her car open and were going through the car. So i was just wondering if they have the right to actually go through the car or just basically get it on the truck and go. I live in Massachusetts.

Answer
AH  yes they can tow vehicles for expired tags, especially when requested by law enforcement

Now as to "THEY" with the back doors open, it is really hard to say anything about that, as I do not know who "THEY" were.. I am assuming that you mean the tow company, well if the police were still then then it could of been as simple as both parties doing an inventory of the vehicle contents. After all you would want an accounting showing that bag of diamonds under the seat of the vehicle..

That part is "CYA" mainly, and I think you can understand that one...

But it mainly boils down to accepting responsibility for the vehicle and its contents... Yes at times there are "crooked" tow companies and drivers but it is not the norm...

And seeing as how I was not there and do not know the whole story, I can not really make a judgement on this issue.
