Land Rover Repair: 94 Land Rover, disco drain, all the right moves

Question
Hey!
OK, from the top:
-I changed the oil, couldn't get the filter off, so it took a while.
However, when I got the old filter off, I filled the new filter with
oil, attached it firmly.
Seemed to be fine. Then the car would not start, sounded clicky,
I knew the battery old though.

I couldn't get a jump until 1 day later, BUT when jumped- the
car started, but would not engage when in gear!

So, I checked the transmission fluid (while idling) it was low, I
turned off the car & added just a bit more. checked again it was
fine.
The car then engaged in gear but has no power, goes forward
and backward but revs & barely moves!
Whew?
What could it be?
I know  I put the right amount of oil in...
did the oil pump lose self prime?
Thank you !
Melissa

Answer
Hi Melissa,

did you have troubles BEFORE the oil change?  Sounds like you all the right moves during the oil change.

Difficult start should not the result of oil circulation.  IF the oil pump is not working, you'd hear and eventually smell the problem.  Temperatures would jump up fast and the noise would be awful.

Hard start could be battery, alt, starter related.  IF you have low cylinder compression, this too can be a problem.

You managed to get the engine started.  How does it idle? 750rpm to 800?

Tranny fluid was low...is there a leak?  How old is that fluid?  Change it every 2 years.

Could you have a transfer gearbox problem?  Check the gear oil level to make sure you have some!  Found just below centre console (from underneath Disco).  Drain plug on bottom and fill plug is higher on the side (recessed).  Use a ratchet socket to open this.  Clean area first to make sure no dirt gets into the transfer gearbox or on the threads of the plug.

Best of luck,
