Motorcycle Repair: Adding lights, license plate bracket, hi chris

Question
Hi Chris, my question is can I safely add two 1157 tail/brake lights to the rear of a 04' roadstar. My concern is if the circuit will support two additional tail lights. I have already made the splice and used the wires behind the license plate bracket for my connection. They work fine, but I have been told that the circuit may be overloaded with the 1157 bulbs. What is your opinion please. Thank you, Richard

Answer
Hi Richard.

I suggest that you install a set of the LED type tail/brake lights instead.  They have the same or better light output than the 1157's and pull less power to run them.  It will certainly put a minimum strain on the electrical system and that circuit.

I tried to put one in my taillight on my V65 and it drew so little power that the taillight failure light on my instruments came on even though the light was bright and normal looking when power was on.

Good luck and ride safe.
