Land Rover Repair: Land Rover Discovery II Alarm issues, land rover discovery, land rover discovery ii

Question
My little sister is having some issues with her LR Discovery II that is 4 years old, but has under 45k on it.  She had service done on the car in Washington at a non LR dealership (now lives in Long Beach, CA), and ever since weird things have been happening.  About 1 in 3 times she gets in the car, the interior lights stay on for 5-15 minutes.  Lately she has been having the alarm go off in the middle of the night for no reason.  Every time she sets the alarm the horn honks (which I understand means the alarm is not functioning properly).  The dealership told her it is $110.00 to look at the car and guessed 300-$1000.00 to repair.  Is there any way to totally disconnect the alarm so that she can lock the car without the alarm going off, or do you have any suggestions at fixing it?

Answer
Hi Greg,

I would not advise removing any fuses to the alarm system.  It can interfer with the operation of the Disco.  I've seen this problem happen when the door sensors either stick or short out from corrosion.  These sensors are small black buttons that are spring loaded and found on the inside frame of each door.

You can remove and examine them to see if the wires are corroded.  Lub the button to allow them to move freely and try not to get the wires wet.

The other possible cause could be the security immobiliser. This little gadget has been known to fail/corrode and is a real pain to repair for the DIY'er.  Its one of those LR repairs that is best left with the dealer.

My concern is that you disconnect the alarm and you'll never start the Disco.

Best of luck,
