Land Rover Repair: 1999 Discover 2, advance auto parts, advance auto parts store

Question
Just some brief background information on my new LR. I recently bought a 1999 Discovery 2 with 62,000 miles. Within the first two weeks we noticed a sweet burning smell coming from the engine. We took it to the dealer and it turned out to be a coolant and oil leak coming from the head gasket. Luckily it was under warranty and they fixed the problem.

I have two questions for you; 1. I would like to know how to flush the coolant system on my Disco 2, and add new coolant. Do you know of any do it yourself guides on the internet? Can I do this myself?  2. I have heard a special tool is required to change the brake pads on a Disco 2, is this true? If not, is this something I can do on my own?

Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Jason,

nice Disco. 1999 model year is solid.  Glad to read that LR repaired the headgasket for you...gratis.  Sweet.

Since headgasket was done, you can be assured that new coolant was probably used.  As for flushing your coolant, yes, you can do this yourself.  Go to an Advance Auto parts store (if you have one near you) and they'll be more than glad to show you how to do this with the purchase of a kit.  They may even know someone who can help you do it the first time!

As for pad changes, you can do this with the tools you have at hand.  A good rachet set, pliers and (maybe) a brake piston spreader is all that you need.

Best of luck,

JohnMc

NB: Make sure to check the brake fluid level after changing your pads.
