Land Rover Repair: Starter?, stearing wheel, track thanks

Question
99 Disco

I have a fresh battery with a good charge.  When I turn the key I get a "click" like my battery is dead.  I have had trouble in the past where I giggled the shifter and stearing wheel and that fixed it.

Now it dead.  The dealer (who is booked up) told me to tap the starter on with a hammer to jar it free.  Does this sound like I on the right track?

Thanks Grant

PS: not real good with cars.  Not sure where my starter is.  Is it in the middle or left/right side of engine compartment.  top or bottom.

Answer
Hi Grant,

yes, sometimes the main cog within the starter that engages the main crank can be surrounded with rust and gunk.  Tapping the starter can jar it free but eventually it will seize again.

You have the choice, remove the starter and rebuild it, purchase a salvaged one or buy a rebuilt.

If you choose option 1, let me know.
