Land Rover Repair: oil leek and ratling, abnormal operation, ratling

Question
Hi John,  I have had the check engine light flash (never stay on), and have had the engine die but immediately restart.  Beyond that nothing else.  Just a curiosity question, how does it affect the car if the transmission fluid is overfilled?  I checked it today and it appears to be over the full point.  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi David,

overfilling the transmission fluid may cause problems within the transmission.  It could cause abnormal operation within the transmission because the fluid is not performing correctly.

Transmission fluid does not compress, while air does and as a result of overfilling, the fluid could become aerated.

If you're having tranny trouble, it's best to leave the fluid alone and visit a tranny specialist.  They can remove the excess fluid AND determine if any damage has taken place.

Most often, hidden signs of how the tranny is operating can be found in the fluid. Most specialists look to the fluid for clues as to what's going wrong.

Something to remember.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
