Land Rover Repair: Land Rover Discovery 2000 - Warning Lights, land rover discovery, land rover dealer

Question
John, the horn button on the right side of the steering wheel came off and the spring and metal plate under the plastic button kept the horn ingaged for a few long seconds.  Ever since this event the HDC, ABS, and TC lights have reained illuminated.  Is it possible a short was caused by the horn button and triggered the other lights?  How would I test this theory?  Could I reset the indicator lights and then if they return take it to the Land Rover dealer?   Please advise.

Answer
Hi Daniel,

The ABS, TC an HDC lights coming on at the same time is not related to the horn button problem you mention as far as I can tell.  You could reset the code that triggered the '3 amigos' and see if it comes back.  If it does, you'll have to visit your local LR mechanic and have them read the error codes to see what's happening.

To fix the button, you may have to remove the steering wheel air bag.  Important: Disconnect the battery, wait a few minutes THEN using a torx screwdriver remove the airbag.  Don't let the air bag dangle from the wheel when the screws are removed.  Simply disconnect the wiring harness. Place it somewhere secure until you refit it.

With the airbag out of the way, you should be able to repair the horn buttons.  Here's what LR has to say, paying close attention to remove 9, 10 and refit 1, 2:

Steering wheel

Remove
1. Remove drivers airbag.
+RESTRAINT SYSTEMS, REPAIRS,
Airbag module - drivers.
2. Disconnect horn multiplug.
3. Centralise steering wheel with road wheels in straight ahead position.
4. Restrain steering wheel and loosen self locking nut securing steering wheel to column.
5. Release steering wheel from column.
6. Remove and discard self locking nut.
7. Remove steering wheel.
8. Attach tape across edge of rotary coupler to retain correct setting.
9. Release 2 clips securing each horn button to steering wheel.
10. Remove screw securing horn earth lead to steering wheel.

13. Remove radio switches from steering wheel.
14. Remove 2 screws securing cruise control switches to steering wheel.
15. Remove cruise control switches from steering wheel.
16. Remove horns from steering wheel.

Refit
1. Fit horn switches to steering wheel and secure with clips.
2. Fit and tighten screw securing horn earth lead to steering wheel.
3. Fit cruise control switches to steering wheel and secure with screws.
4. Fit radio switches to steering wheel and secure with screws.
5. Connect radio and cruise control multiplugs.
6. Remove tape from rotary coupler.
7. Ensure road wheels are in straight ahead position and indicator cancelling cam are aligned horizontally.
8. Fit steering wheel to column.
9. Connect horn multiplug.
10. Fit and tighten new self locking nut securing steering wheel to column to 43 Nm (32 lbf.ft).
11. Fit drivers airbag.

Best of luck,

NB:  If it turns out that there is major work to be had regarding your ABS, TC & HDC, contact Land Rover North America.  Raise your voice about this common problem, perhaps LRNA will be able to help you with the repair costs.

ALSO, look at previous messages about these lights.  You'll see a fellow owner who spoke to LRNA and there is a number you can call to speak to LRNA's "Gary"...who'd like to know that this is common problem with Disco II's.

If you don't raise your voice about this, LRNA will never know.

John.
