Land Rover Repair: Land Rover Disco 99 Series II, land rover north, disco 99

Question
Hi John,

I am going to pick up the car today.  I did get the ABS Mod replaced and will request that it fixed the problem in writing.  I also requested they give me the faulty part so I can have my other mechanic check it out if need be.

I called Land Rover North America yesterday and made the complaint...as a matter of fact, they said they would get back to me within 48 hours letting me know if they can reimburse me for any of the abs mod cost. They were surprisingly very helpful (maybe it was the fact that I knew how to report the part to the Attorney General).

Thank you for your help!
Kathryn

We have a 1999 LR Disco with 65K miles.  We have been experiencing the "three amigos" problem for about 6K miles...as it was intermittent, we finally took it in to the dealer (the only people in the area who work on Land Rovers) to check it out.  I read alot about it being a somewhat minor issue.  The dealer came back and states that we need to completely replace the ABS modulator for a fee of $2500.  They walked me through their testing process--a bunch of codes that made no sense to me--and explained that although it could have been the wheel sensor, it was actually a faulty valve. The only way to fix the valve is the replace the whole modulator.

Does this sound right?  Please let me know ASAP as I'm about to get it done.

Also, we just experience the "check engine" light blinking amber this morning.  Waiting to hear back on this...any suggestions?

Thank you,Kathryn

Hi Kathryn

its a known problem that has haunted Series II Disco's for some time.  Many owners have written about this problem and from what I gather its a problem here in N.America, the UK and elsewhere.

IF you make repairs to this problem, I would have the LR dealership put in writing "replacing the ABS modulator will resolve this problem completely".  I've seen other replace many parts, including the modulator, and still the lights eventually came back.

IF you have the modulator replaced and the problem does come back, ensure "in writing" that the LR dealer will repair this problem at no charge to you.  I doubt they'll go for it but give it a try.

You can also call "Gary" at Land Rover North America and make a complaint. Gary called another Disco II owner and said he never heard of this problem.  Imagine that!  Call Gary and let him know that this problem is not rare and that many owners are upset about the high cost of repairing this common problem.

Only after 100's of calls will LRNA and Gary understand that this problem is not going away.  You can reach Gary at 1-800-637-6837. Hit 9 then follow instructions to add extension.  Help Gary understand the magnitude of this problem.

Best of luck,

Hi Kathryn,

that's very encouraging news.  Bravo!  I hope this works out for you.

We owners have keep the pressure on LRNA to fix these nagging problems and become more aware of our dissatisfaction with the servicing of our vehicles.

Something has to be done and it looks like we have to do it.
