Land Rover Repair: 2000 Landrover Discovery II, brake pads and rotors, landrover discovery

Question
I have a 2000 Dicovery and bought it used from the dealership(not a landroveer dealership) in March of 2005. I just had the crank shaft sensor replaced and also the throttle.( it didn't start at all.  I just picked it up last week and now i hear whistling noise while driving. I can't tell if it's from the brakes or it sort of sounds like a valve loose. when i push the gas it seems like it's louder.( sounds like the timing belt is off)
Landrover has not returned my calls. i don't want to take it in to get diagnosed again for $90 bucks an hour. I may need new roters on my brakes one of the guys at my work said. Know of any great mechanics in San Diego, California(USA).
I can't believe i am having so many issue so soon wiht this car.
I have 90,000 miles on it. i bought it with 88,000 miles on it.
thanks

Answer
Hi Gary,

If you did not have the noise BEFORE the LR dealership serviced the vehicle, I'd take it back and demand they correct THEIR mistake.  Make some noise and they'll listen.  If you complain enough, the dealership should at least look into the problem to determine where it is and if they were at fault, as you suspect.

Hard to say what the cause could be. Can you replicate the noise while stationary?  If so, it could be engine related.  If you have to be moving, it could be your brakes.  My son reminded me that it could be a crack in the exhaust manifold.  He also remined me how hard it was to remove and replace the manifold in my Disco.  If this is the case, the whistle should be heard even when stationary and could get louder as the crack develops.

Have you considered doing the brake work yourself?  Amazingly, it could save you up to $1000 by doing it yourself.  Raybestos make both brake pads and rotors for our Disco's.  You may want to search for more specialized rotors (perforated rotors) to reduce heat and increase stopage.  AC-Delco also has Disco brake parts.

If you need parts for you Disco, also consider purchasing SOME parts from your local salvage yard.
www.car-part.com has links to salvage yards all over N.America and its well worth keeping this in your owner's manual.  Just this week, a fellow Disco owner saved ~$2000 by buying a major part thru this link.

As for a good LR mechanic in the San Diego area...here is the San Diego LandRover club website:

http://www.lrcsd.com

Check out the website and they should me more than happy to refer you to a reputable LR dealership or mechanic.  Its VERY important to find a good mechanic...I can't stress this enough.*  Make sure you register with Land Rover North America (LRNA) as the new owner of your Disco.  This will ensure that you are notified of any and all factory recalls.

I have fond memories of San Diego (Microsoft TechED 2004) and wish you well with your 2000 Disco II.  British cars are noted for their luxury AND their frequent break downs. Its a shame that such a smart vehicle has so many 'dumb' component failures.  JD Power rates the LR just above the KIA for problems per vehicle.  Ouch.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
