Land Rover Repair: Disco 2000 ABS/TC/HDC, disco 2000, salvage yard

Question
I have a 2000 Disco with the usual 3 suspects acting up.  It's not just the lights.  The functions are indeed not operative.  The dealer says the ABS modulator should be replaced for $$$.

Based on what I have read, I declined pending more investigation.  He "reset the codes" and the lights went out and ABS/TC/HDC worked fine for 48 hours.

I understand that there could be an intermittant problem with the ABS modulator that trips the fault codes but why do things continue to have problems until the flags are reset?  Does the computer have the ability to keep the ABS system from working?  How does he know the problem isn't electronic rather than the modulator?

Any thoughts or advice?  I tried disconnecting the battery for a while to see if anything would reset - didn't help.

Many Thanks,
Dave

Answer
Hi Dave,

I've read that other owners have had the modulator replaced and not long after the faults came back.  Like a relative that comes for a visit but never leaves!

It all seems to be focused upon the ABS modulator.  As for why it take the complete failure of the ABS to finally trigger the 3 amigos...its a programming question best sent to LandRover, Webco and Bosch.

Most time, I've heard that some service tech's just swap parts in and out to see if it solves the problem.  If not, they move to the next in a sequence of steps.

Its a mystery to me what solves this problem, I only know who pays the bill.  I just hope the dealership will do the right thing and swap out only those parts that are faulty.

If the dealer is telling you its the ABS modulator, perhaps you could consider buying a used one from a salvage yard.  The yards I've seen all have limited warranties and some have tested the unit to make sure it works.  The lowest I've seen a 2000 Disco ABS modulator was $100 and the highest was $675.

enter you vehicle data and search for ABS parts.
