Land Rover Repair: Bleeding the FUEL System on TDi 95 Discovery, diesel fuel system, land rover discovery

Question
Hi John,

You answered this question yesterday and i think you may have mis read the question. You gave me an answer for bleeding the COOLING system instead of Bleeding the FUEL system. Thats why i am asking the question again. Thanks for your quick response though.

I need to bleed the FUEL system on my 95 Tdi discovery. I have looked in the 'haynes land rover discovery manual' and the description there is very vague. Please could you give me some advice on it or could you give me step by step instructions on how to bleed the system.

Thanks in advance

Simon

Answer
Hi Simon,

UH-OH!  My excuse is poor but valid...I'm sooo tired.  I quickly read your Q and having just answered a 'bleeding' problem, I just jumped to the wrong conclusion.  Sorry.

Fuel is drawn from the tank by a mechanical lift pump and passes to the injection pump via a filter. In addition to removing particle contamination from the fuel, the filter incorporates a water separator, which removes and stores both bound and unbound water.

Bleeding a diesel fuel system should be easy enough.  Ensure engine is off.  Place a container under the fuel filter element to catch any spills.

Turn ignition ON to start pump (but don't turn engine over).

Loosen bleed screw to allow air to escape.

Tighten (close) bleed screw.

Turn engine over and run for a few moments.

Turn engine off.

Again, turn ignition ON ( but don't turn engine over).

Loosen bleed screw and allow any air to escape.

Tighten screw.

DONE.

I gleaned this from a Series repair manual.  Should be same for your Tdi.

Best of luck.
