Question -
My 1999 Disco II is stuck in park. When I touch the brake the differential locks (light illuminates). I have had this problem in the past and had to change a fuse. I am not sure if I burned the wire is burned. Is there anyway I can get the vehicle in gear?

Thanks for the help!

Hi Jeff,

for the Disco I, should be the same for Disco II, here is what I know about 'stuck in park' woes:

The quick fix is to check Fuse F1 in the fascia fuse box. If the fuse is blown, replace it. If the fuse always blows, check the terminals on the rear defrost to make sure there is not a short. This has known to happen.

One owner wrote me and stated that his dealer fixed the problem by lifting the Disco off the ground and allowing the tranny to 'unwind'.  Not sure about this but it worked for them.

If your brake lights DON'T come on when you press the pedal, it could be the brake switch. You can try to patch things by jumping the green/purple wire and the green/orange wire.  Once you do this, the brake lights should come on full-time and you should be able to shift out of park.  A new switch is necessary.

Then there is the Park/Neutral switch inhibitor on the gearbox that can fail - uncommon but possible.  The swich is located on the gearbox and somewhat simple to replace except for the cramped space.  Normally, this is a LR dealership repair (unless you have a spare one handy).  If this is the cause, I know of no way to limp into the dealership without the aid of a tow truck or replacing the switch where the Disco sits.

Best of luck,

JohnMc

NB:  if you need install instructions for the park/neutral switch, just send me an email and I'll send you an install diagram.  I'll look around and see what I can find for you.

Jon - what do you mean jumping the wires if my brake lights do not operate?

Thanks

Jeff,

if you press the brake pedal and NO brake lights appear on the back of your Disco, its possible that the plunger on the switch (or the contac) is not working.  If so, then you could try the following temporary fix (used on Disco I's):

Disconnect the negative cable to the battery.  Then cross the green/purple wire with the green/orange wire OF YOUR BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH. You cut the two wires mentioned and cross them.  That is, clip the wires, expose the copper, twist them together, thus 'jumping' the brake pedal switch.

Once done, reattach the negative cable to your battery and look to see if your brake lights are continuously on.  If not, you've probably cut the wrong wires.  Use electrical tape to cover the wires after you've twist tied them together.

This is only a temporary means of correcting a problem. This 'work around' was forwarded to me from a fellow Disco I owner who did this to by-pass his brake switch.

Does this make sense to you?  If not, write me and I'll try to find something online that might clarify this.

Regards,

JohnMc
