Land Rover Repair: Freelander service engine soon light, engine management system, service appointment

Question
I have an '02 Freeland SE. it has 39k miles on it. My service engine soon light seems to come on at randon times. I have noticed if sometimes if I accelerate hard and for a breif time, the light will sometimes  come on, or it will just come on at random times. Usually it turns itself off after a couple of days but this time is has been on for over 2 weeks. Is there a way to turn it off without going to the dealership, they usually keep it two days. Also I was thinking about changing the oil my self as my dealer wants over $100 to do it, what filter should I use and is Mobil 1 0/40w the best oil to use. One more silly question, how do you set the clock on the radio,, the manula says that it should self set, but no luck in my case.

Thanks for all your help and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Answer
Hi Jonathan,

here's what I know about Freelander clocks:

SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT

Normally, this is reset by the dealership.  I know how to do this for a Discovery but I'm not sure for the Freelander.

In the owner's manual, p.47, it states:

Service engine soon- AMBER illuminates as a bulb check when the starter switch is turned to position ‘II' and extinguishes when the engine is started. If the light illuminates while the engine is running, this indicates the detection of an emissions fault by the engine management system.

If the light illuminates and the vehicle drives normally:

•Contact a retailer to arrange a service appointment at your earliest convenience - you may still drive the vehicle.

If the light flashes and/or the vehicle does not drive normally:

•Avoid high speeds and seek immediate assistance from your retailer.

OIL CHANGE

Yes, its possible for you to do this.  If you check in your owner's manual, you'll find the instructions for do this.  See page 132 to 135.  If you don't have an owner's manual, send me an email and I'll send you what I can find.

CLOCK
The digital clock display illuminates when the starter switch is turned on and dims for night viewing when the sidelights are switched on.

With the starter switch turned to position ‘I', depress the hour (‘H') and minute (‘M') buttons to set the time. If both buttons are pressed together, the display will change between 24 hour and 12 hour displays.

NOTE: If the battery is disconnected, the clock will need to be reset.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
