Land Rover Repair: 3 lights on at once then a double misfire, wheel sensors, landrover dealer

Question
I have a 1999 disco 2 with 54,000 miles. 2 weeks ago the abs, tc, and hill descent control (/!) lights all came on at once. Then about a week later the engine misfires (bang! bang!) while I'm in the Ghetto. Really Scary. I took it in and those mechanics (who I suspect are just a $ making operation) say its the "shutter valve" and that I need to bring it in AGAIN so they can "properly determine" how much $ it will cost. I'm already fed up with them. Its my third visit since I bought the car 2 months ago. So I take it to another person and they say its the ABS system. Sigh. Have you ever heard of this ?

Answer
Hi Michael,

yes, this is a problem with Disco II's.  I call them the 3 amigo's and once they come to visit, they may never leave!

It can be one of many problems, wheel sensors, ABS ECU, modulator, shutter valve, ....

There is little choice in the matter except that you should take it to a LandRover dealer or specialist ONLY. I agree its a pain but if you tackle this problem yourself, you'll be swapping out parts for nothing until you get the problem fixed.  Come to think of it...that's what some LR service departments do.

In a best-case scenario, the LR technician would swap out the suspected parts to see what works and what does not.  We can only hope that LR does not charge us for those parts that are still working.

A recent JD Powers survey showed that LandRover had, on average, 3.95 ppv (problems per vehicle), the only other car worse was the Kia.  Interestingly, another JD Powers study showed that the LR was the 2nd most appealing vehicle.  So its 2nd best in appeal and 2nd worst in problems.

Makes you wonder...we all like LandRover's, so why are they being built so badly?  My guess is that the love affair ends shortly before the warranty expires.  I digress..

Best of luck,

JohnMc

NB:  I remember a fellow in a previous thread, who was starting a class action suit against LR over this very problem.  No word from him todate.
