Land Rover Repair: 99 d2 not firing 97k miles, general mechanics, green sport

Question
While coming to a stop the engine stalled. After turning the engine over a few tries it started. The next day when slowing down i felt the transmission shift down with a clunk the green sport mode light came on and was blinking and the engine would stall. I changed the trans. filter, fuel pump, new battery, mafs. No more sport mode light but the engine now will only randomly start. When it does it runs smooth for about 5min then dies.I have found that im not getting any spark from any of the plugs. My guess is the coil pack? Can you help?

Answer
Hi Brantley,

so you have a difficult starting '99 Disco II that, on occasion, will stall while coming to a stop.

It sounds like an ignition problem and it could be the coil.  There is more components involved than just the coil.  It could be one of a few sensors or even (gasp) the ECU itself.

Most general mechanics can bench test your coilpack to determine if its working properly.  The other sensors are a different matter and best left to a LR dealer.

If you've seen that there is no spark, or very little, try a local garage and ask to have the coilpack tested.  If its a good garage they'll be able to test out the wires, alt and battery just to be sure.

After that, you'll have to have it diagnosted on a testbook at a dealership.

Did you see a CHECK ENGINE warning?  If so, again most garages can read the code which will help them locate the problem area.

Best of luck,
