Land Rover Repair: oxy sensors and fuel pump, spark plug wire, o2 sensors

Question
John

A few months ago a gentleman put my 97 disco on the computer and stated that I would need to replace the oxy sensors but that I did not need to right away.  The other day I was driving down the highway and the car went dead I got to the side of the road but the car would not start.  it turns over but will not start and it seems as though I smell gas strongly when trying to start.  would the sensor cause it to just fall dead if it's already running? I have ordered two sensor's where what would be the next logical thing to replace if this is not the only problem.  I am calling the repairman to come this weekend but as I am a lady don't want to be taken advantage so what should the logical steps be.  thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Hi Sheila,

the O2 sensors detects oxygen after the engine has fired the oxygen/fuel mixture.  IF your O2 sensors were failing I doubt it could cause the engine to stall.  This is probably a different problem and, according to your description, it could be related to the ignition system.

Strong fuel smell could mean that there is little or no spark.  It could be your alternator, coilpack, a spark plug wire(s), to name a few possible causes.

Get an estimate and if you are not sure, send me another question and I'll do my best to help you out.

Bye for now and best of luck,

JohnMc
