Land Rover Repair: Range Rover Classic Issues, latch system, door latch

Question
Hello,  I have a 1995 Range Rover Classic with 150k miles with unknown repair history (it has had the air to spring coil conversion) - I purchased it on ebay last year and have been generally happy.  I am however, having an occasional but more frequently occuring) issue with a strange and loud clicking felt in the brake when braking, especially in turns, and it feels as though the brake does not engage completely, requiring a pump to get it to re-engage.  Does this sound familiar?
It feels like something not in the brake system itself, but something else mechanical which is attached to the brake/transmission.

The only other issue I have is that all (aside from one) of the outside door handles have stopped working - that is, they do not open the doors anymore, they don't do anything when pulled - this was an intermittent problem which has now become permanent - any suggestions?

Also, do you know any good (not the dealer, pls) mechanics in the Reno area for RRovers?

Many Thanks,
Cary

Answer
Hi Cary,

it could be a loose caliper or a problem within a caliper, such as a seized piston that won't retract after usage.  You'll need to have the brake examined by a reputable brake shop.  LR dealer can do this too but expect to pay more for parts and labour.

As for the door handles not working properly, well...welcome to the club!  I suspect the nylon push rod is slipping off the metal hinge within the door latch system.  Here is a website that shows you how to adjust the latch system.  I think the Rangie is the same as the Disco in this problem:

www.discoweb.org

select TECH section and search for "Door handle adjustment" topic.

Lastly, if you're looking for good mechanics, my suggestion is to find a LandRover club in your area.  Some owners/members can refer to you to good dealers or mechanics.

Here is the Las Vegas LR club website: http://www.lrclv.com/

You can always send a friendly question to the President of this club, Vince Coratello: president@lrclv.com

I'm sure they'll know a few mechanics closer to you.

NB:  sometimes, dealers have an interest in managing these clubs.  I'm not sure about the LV club. If you get a referral to a dealership...be careful.  Most times, these clubs are on the "up-and-up" but there are a few that are self-serving dealerships in disguise.  Buyer beware!  In your case, Rover beware!
