Land Rover Repair: ABS, TC, LIGHT ON WHEN BRAKING ALONG WITH SQUEKING NOISE, wheel sensors, abs system

Question
hi,
I have 2003 disco(45000) . I changed the pads front and rear with Mintex brand last year arround November '03.
My problem is , since then , my brake sueking On and Off with pressure on the pedal. The noise  sometimes very loud along with the ABS, TC, BRAKE lights on . I took it to the dealer , thay told me that they can not fix the problem, because i have the aftermarket pads. The dealer told me that the pads are still 60% and they suggested me to change the rotors and pads with them for about $1,500. Are these going to fix my problem (ABS, TC, BRAKE lights on) ?? Do I need to try to bleed the line first before taking it to the dealer ?   The last mechanic that installed my pads told me that the rotors were fine. Is the dealer are going to sell me the ABS modulator ?? this problem seems like common to Disco , how come they never fix  this ? I am planning to change the rotors , do you recommend to buy the caliper rebuilt kits also ??? any other parts ?

Thank you for you time,

Roverpilot

Answer
Hi Roverpilot,

there is nothing more annoying than BS from LR.  Seems like someone wants to hook you for new pads and rotors at a hefty price of $1500.

IF your rotors are worn beyond the manufacturers limit then you should have them changed.  You should have a brake specialist (Meineke, Midas, Goodyear...)examine your brakes to determine this.  IF your calipers are seizing then you should consider a rebuild kit from LR.  I've done this and it can save you plenty of $$$.

It's quite possible that your wheel sensors may be faulty and I'm not sure if the ABS modulator is at fault from your description either.  If your continuously getting these lights on, you should address the brake parts first before venturing into the cloudy dimension of the ABS system.

As for why the ABS problem is so persistent, its a mystery to me.

On my '95 Disco, I use Raybestos pads and rotors.

Best of luck,
