Land Rover Repair: my disco is sluggish, drain bolt, exhaust pipes

Question
John,  I have a 2001 discovery and it is not my daily driver. I hit a deer with it and it stayed in the shop for about a month with not very much gas in the tank. When I picked it up I noticed that the check engine light was on and when I try and accelerate fast it was sluggish and it would actually slow down. If I accelerate slow it would be fine until I reach about 80mph and that was as fast as it will go and it becomes sluggish again. The other night I drove it pretty hard and when I parked it I looked underneath the car and the exhaust pipes were glowing red. Is this a catylitic problem? Also, how do you check the tranny fluid on a disco and how do you change it using what kind of fluid. This might sound like a stupid question but if this is a cat problem is it possible to remove them completely. (my state does not have any emmision laws)
Thanks, Mardy

Mardy,

here's a website that is exactly what you need:

http://www.discoweb.org

click the TECH header which will take to a webpage that lists all sorts of repair descriptions.  Near the bottom there is a item "Transmission Disco2".  I think this is what you asked for.

Best of luck,

Hi Mardy,

Is your exhaust pipe glowing red BEFORE or AFTER the cats?  If its before, the plates in the cats could have broken off and is restricting the natural flow of exhaust.  This would cause the pipes to superheat. This should be taken care of ASAP.

Yes, I've heard of owners who have cut out (hollowed out) the cats on the "Y" pipe of their Disco's.

Do you think the deer kill caused some front-end problems, say...the radiator or viscous fan?

The tranny fluid can be changed by removing the drain bolt from underneath the vehicle.  Give me some time and I'll try to find a website that might help.
