A friend sent me your response to Katie, which mentions my
being in arrears of a culmination report regarding the problem,
to which, to wit, I have been led off of but not detered; simply
side-tracked. The sun's too hot to continue work this afternoon.
I've cleaned and gleaned points of connection, replaced the tail
light bulbs & assured  clean contacts thereof, etc. Let's get under
the dash panel, the 'brake engaged' switch which turns out to be
the lower of a pair, which I only realized today with closer
inspection. Originally you mention a set of 4 wires on the 'brake
light switch. This switch, the lower, has two wires, one is green/
purple the other green/YELLOW. Artist that I am, I witness that
there is a plathora twixt yellow and orange, at least in paint. Safe
to say this wire is not coded green/orange. But I tried to jump
them anyway. The brake lights did not come on. In turn I went to
check the lights and changed the bulbs, cleaned the
connections, anyway. Within this process I notice the switch
above this one (which also has a vacuum tube connected), but it
has more wires than 4 connected via a removable block, none
color coded as to what I was given to search for. I looked
at it slyly, but declined to attack it since it did not fit your
description of the likely culprit. Yet the other one didn't either, I
simply made my own sense out of the situation in order to
proceed. The switch in question is activated by the depression of
the brake pedal. This action appears to manually (or pedally)
close the end of what I am calling a vacuum tube. There is a
spring on the shaft to insure travel upon depression of the
pedal. I chose not to take this unit apart to investigate (it looks
like it was meant to come apart for some maintainence).
I feel like I am closer, I can taste the cigar. You may offer further
advice. Thank you for your attention. Ronald

Hi Ronald,

sorry for the late response...I've been travelling and unable to check my email.

What is the year and model of your Land Rover?  I'll check my sources and try to find the wire
colour codes.

Answer
Hi Ronald,

your 1996 has its own electronic repair section.  I have some pages I can send you BUT I can't use this website to display graphics.

If you want to see the electronic wiring diagrams, send me an email and I'll respond with some pdf pages that might help you out.

I suspect it has something to do with the ignition and shift interlock.

JohnMc
