Buick/Olds: coolant, risk engine, prestone

Question
my brother called me up telling me he realised after he put in the coolant that he forgot to mix it with water. i figured he should drain the system and start over again. i was wondering if that was the right choice.

Answer
Shlomo

It would depend on if he filled it full from empty with coolant only and mixed NO water at all. If all he did was top it up with coolant that would be no problem really. If it was filled from empty with 100% coolant then draining and refilling with a 50/50 mixture would be recommended. Driving with 100% coolant will damage the cooling system and risk engine overheat. Just like using 100% water would boil out and cause a major overheat. You did the right thing by being cautious. It's cheaper to buy another jug of Prestone than it is to buy another engine!
