Land Rover Repair: Wiper failure, door latch, wd 40

Question
Please can you help with the following. My car is a
Discovery 300tdi (94 M plate / Aug 1st). 85000 miles. last serviced at 84000 miles by independent Land Rover garage.

I have just returned from holiday and the wipers appear to have failed during the period that the car was standing idle. The front wiper blades move to the vertical position and but will not return without me manually moving them back. The rear wiper doesn't work at all.
The washer jets - both front and rear - work fine.

Prior to leaving on holiday both front and rear wipers worked fine.

I have checked the fuses and all is OK. I have also lubricated the front wiper arm linkages but to no avail.  I cannot hear any clicking noise from where I understand the relays to be located (passenger and driver footwells)

Answer
Hi Mike,

its possible that the wiper linkage in front needs to be replaced.  This happened to my '95 Disco and was only corrected when I finally replaced the entire linkage.  When I swapped out the old linkage I found all sorts of rust and corrosion within the electronics.  As our Disco's get older, corrosion within the electronics becomes a big problem.

As for the rear wiper, I would suspect that lubrication may be able to solve that problem.  Again, on my '95, I had intermittent rear wiper use and found that dust and grime affect how the blade moves.  I removed the rear tire, lubricated the outside arm, removed the rear door panel and completely lubricated the interior with WD-40.
My theory is that the same grit that affects the rear door latch can affect the wiper as well. So far, I've not had to replace the rear wiper linkage ... only wiper blades so far.

Best of luck with this,

JohnMc
