Land Rover Repair: Steering Wheel Defective Material !?, land rover defender, defender tdi

Question
An insect is eating away the steering wheel from inside.  It enters at one point and then travels inside along the steering wheel making it like hollow pipe.

Problem occured in a number of Land Rover Defender TDI-300 Diesel Vehicles.

What preventive measures you suggest to overcome the recurrence of the problem ?

Answer
Hi Kamal,

This is the first time I've heard of a steering wheel disolving from within.  Has to be corrosion and once it starts there's little that can be done.

You could always bore a hole and inject a resin that would harden but it would never be the same as the original.

The only problem I have with my Disco steering wheel is that the rubber exterior is slowly slipping off the metal interior.  After 11 years, my guess is that the adhesive is degrading.

Best of luck and I wish I could help.  Best method is just a simple exchange.
