Land Rover Repair: Discovery brake rotors, brake rotors, brake overhaul

Question
Replacing brake rotors on a 1996 Discovery.I noticed a bluish coating on the new L/R oem parts. My question is what is this coating,do you clean it off ? The dealer sold me a complete brake overhaul package ie: rotors, pads, seals, gaskets, locking washers, and brake cleaner. I would appreciate any help because I can not locate a service manual in my area. Thanks

Answer
Hi Gary,

this is probably the finish spray to protect the essential parts from collecting any grease and oils.  Its always best to generously use brake cleaner after you install the parts to clean away any surface grease and oils.  Don't worry about that blue finish...it won't be there for long.  It is most important to keep the rotors and pads free from any oils or grit...so use the brake cleaner after you finish and let it dry a good 30 minutes before you test drive your Disco.

As for a manual describing the install process, here is a website you should consider:

http://groups.msn.com/LRDiscovery

look into the Pictures section and you'll find seven (7) pages on installation of brake rotors and pads.  I hope the resolution is good enough...

Best of luck,

JohnMc
