Land Rover Repair: 1999 Disco II Check Engine Codes, vacuum leaks, exhaust leaks

Question
My 99 Disco II started having these symptoms about two weeks ago; after sitting overnight, it will start fine, run for about 30 seconds and then the engine will die.  It will then crank just fine and occassionally start, but then immediately die.  If I keep trying for a few minutes, it will eventually start and run.  After it gets warmed up, it runs just fine with no loss of power as far as I can tell.  The OBDII codes present are P1184, P0102, P0154.
Which one should I troubleshoot and/or fix first?

Answer
Hi Giovanni,

the first code indicates oil temperture is out of range, the other two codes are emission related; 0102 is Maf fault and 0154 is O2 sensor fault.

You can verify that wires to MAF and O2 sensor are ok, check for any vacuum leaks or leak around the MAF.  Clean the MAF tube (before MAF) and even (gently) clean the MAF with electrical contact cleaner.  Check your air filter.

Check for any exhaust leaks before O2 sensor.

Its also possible that the passenger side 02 sensor could be faulty.

Cheapest route to to do some cleaning, wire checks, vacuum leak check and aif filer check/replace.  Next would be 02 sensos check and replacement.  MAF sensor is most expensive.

Could be O2 failure.  Goto www.roversnorth.com for a detailed explaination of O2 sensors and tests.  The latest issue had a great article on this.  Download this PDF format file from Rover's North.

Best of luck,
