Land Rover Repair: 1995 land rover discovery expansion tank problem, land rover discovery, coolant system

Hey John,

Yesterday after doing errands, I noticed a significant leak from under the left side of
the vehicle. Looks like a coolant leak. I'm
told that the expansion tank burst.

Are you familiar with this type of situation?
What are the possible solutions?

Hi Danielle,

So far, I've been lucky with the cooling system.  If the tank has burst, it'll have to be replaced.  Its rare that it failed but I guess anything can happen.

You can either purchase a new one or try to find a used one from a salvage yard.  I am not sure of the OEM price that LR would charge (new) but you can try to locate a used (salvaged) price at this website:

Once you have the part, you'll have to remove the old, install the replacement then flush and fill the coolant system, making sure no air is trapped in the system.

If this seems too difficult, I'd suggest you have a LR mechanic do it.  Actually, in this case, most general mechanics should be able to do this as it is very straight forward.
